Unforgettable experience
Lucky students Jake Ryan and Maeve Walsh were accompanied by their teachers Margaret Meagher and Father Bernie Moloney on a trip to Kenya to see Concern’s work firsthand. Recently, they came to visit us in Concern’s offices to tell us about their experience. Margaret said:
Concern is helping people to help themselves. They empower people – I saw it in practice and was impressed. Every year, between half and three quarters of our students take part in the Concern Fast. They bring in between €5 and €200 each. Our trip to Kenya, where we visited Concern projects in Nairobi and Kisumu, convinced us that the money we collect through the Fast is well spent.
Maeve and Jake were equally impressed with the work Concern is doing and found the experience deeply thought-provoking and inspiring. But it also made them realise how lucky they are to be living in Ireland where access to food and education is not such a luxury.
Broadening horizons
Cashel Community School have been doing the Concern Fast for over 10 years and in that time have raised around €80,000. School chaplain Fr Moloney said:
Doing the Concern Fast is great for the students. It broadens their horizons and makes them think of how other people live their lives.
