A future teacher

Last week, we took a little trip down memory lane. The journey continues…meet Annie Kalenga Nkungwe.

Annie Kalenga Nkungwe
Annie is 10 years of age and lives in the village of Monga in central Katanga in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Annie featured in last year’s Fast. Her story showed how tough life can be for some children.

Last year

Annie dreamt of becoming a teacher. But it seemed unlikely, as her mother was sick, and was trying to care for her six children. There was no money available to send any of the children to school.

This year

Annie has different worries now: mostly how to beat her younger brother in their school’s math competition!

Good harvests

In 2007 and 2008, Annie’s family received seeds and tools from Concern. Over two years, the family received 25kg of groundnuts, 12kg of beans, 2kg of maize, 1kg of rice. They also received hoes and other garden tools.

The harvest produced by these seeds fed Annie’s entire family. There was also enough to be sold, which paid for school for Annie and her brother.

Catching up

Now, as Annie explained to us, she has some catching up to do, having missed out on school last year. She is studying hard, and is still determined to become a teacher. Her goal is to teach poor children all over Katanga.

What happens next?

To ensure children like Annie are given a chance, Concern will continue to support the poorest families in this region.

We plan to develop activities specifically designed to empower vulnerable people like Annie’s mother. Who, because of chronic illness or handicap, can’t survive without some help.
